Doujin Review: Moon For You (Hetalia)

Today, I thought I’d review another Hetalia doujinshi I read a while ago called あなた への月(anata he no tsuki), which translates roughly to “Moon For You”. Yeah, the title is much better in Japanese. So without further ado, the stats and review. Hey, that rhymed!

Link:Yeah, don't have one. Sorry.

Title: あなたへの月(Moon For You)
Author/Artist: R15
Character(s) or Pairing(s): China and Japan
Rating: PG
Warnings: Angst, and ink splatters blood. Also a fatally cute Chibihon

Hetalia fandom tends to be angsty, and this doujinshi is no exception. The whole premise of this doujinshi is angst. You have your angsty Japan (which isn’t too OOC, seeing as he tends to be pensive in canon, and very serious) and you have your angsty China. That’s right. ANGSTY CHINA. Only in the fandom guys, only in the fandom.

Anyway, if you follow Hetalia, you would have probably guessed that this doujinshi is about the first Sino-Japanese War. You’re right. I wouldn’t really say that this is a ChinaXJapan doujin at all. The relationship between the two counties is purely that of brothers, or at least, former brothers. Most of the pages in this doujinshi are devoted to angsty flashbacks showing the good memories, and the really, really bad memories. I guess there isn’t much of a plot, but for a doujinshi, it has enough to spare.

Realistically, the relationship between the countries China and Japan has been pretty strained since this war to present day. There’s been a lot of war and death, and not too much forgiveness. Knowing that, the end of this story can be a real downer, even though it was probably meant to be uplifting.

The art in this doujinshi is pretty good. It has a really Asian feel to it, although it was made in Japan, so that kind of goes without saying… Something interesting to note is that all the flashback pages lack background, focusing only on China and Japan. I thought that was a neat decision on the part of the artist. ☺ I also love the way this artist draws China. I was never a big China fan before reading this, but now I am, and now China is one of the few characters I have confidence in drawing.

I do have a few issues though. For one, this artist seemed to have a hard time drawing Japan consistently, which makes him look a lot younger than he should at times. Actually, now that I think about it, Japan looked very young throughout the entire doujin! Obviously when he was a little kid, he looked young, but this doujinshi is mainly set during the Sino-Japanese War from 1894-1895. Japan looks like a teenager, but by that time he should be fully grown, like he was in canon. That’s my biggest problem. The other is that the clothes China was wearing when Japan attacked him was different from canon, but that’s just a small thing.

I had a really hard time rating this doujinshi. I still don’t know exactly what its rating should be. Something between 7 and 8. So…7.5? Ok, 7.5/10. It’s good, but not quite on par with Silencer. If you want angst, you get angst. If not, well, you get Chibihon.
